Background: Muscles store carbohydrate fuel (glucose) in the form of glycogen, which gets used during exercise and replenished during recovery. How quickly and efficiently muscle glycogen is recovered during rest influences performance during subsequent training sessions or competition.

Results: Fit male athletes engaged in intense endurance exercise, after which they received glucose for recovery with or without ketone ester supplementation. When the athletes received the ketone ester, glucose uptake by the muscles was 32% faster, and muscle glycogen was 50% higher, compared to the control.
