Half Ironman with Ketone Esters

My First Half Ironman: Introduction

In August I will be racing my first Half Ironman.

This endurance event is comprised of a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike, and a 13.1 mile run. 


I could not be more excited to test my mettle in this fashion. This endeavor will be a culmination of a lot of hard work and dedication. Although I am a former division 1 runner and have competed in numerous triathlons over the past few years, this is by far my most daunting physical undertaking. 


The race is a few weeks away and my training is becoming more and more grueling with every day. Finding the time and mustering the energy to train three different disciplines while working a full-time job and finishing my master’s degree is becoming a tough balancing act. 


But like many of you, I shine my brightest when staring a challenge in the face. 

 


Train Hard, Recover Harder 


My training is ramping up in a big way. Not only the frequency in which I train, but the effort I exert and the duration of the sessions. Aside from a dedicated rest day, my week is jam packed with training obligations that I have methodically scheduled. Sometimes I train two separate times a day while others I combine the training of two disciplines into a single session; this is called a brick. ​A brick workout involves training in one discipline, straight into another, with no significant gap or rest period in between. 


Training hard is key, but real improvements as a result of training only come to fruition as a result of proper recovery. 


When I am not out training, I am trying to maximizing my recovery efforts. To name a few tactics, my recovery protocol entails a minimum of 8.5 hours of sleep a day, ice baths, mobility sessions, and a hyper-focused approach to nutrition and supplementation.

The Road Ahead


The past 12 weeks have tested me both mentally and physically. I have a lot of hard work to put in to accomplishing my goal of completing this race in the time I have set for myself. You will have to keep reading this series if you want to find out what time I am shooting for.
